About this course

Description

Participants will develop an understanding of the neurobiology of OUD and risk factors associated with it. Content will include an overview of medication for OUD (MOUD), harm reduction as it applies to OUD, trauma-informed care and the role it plays in effective interventions, Motivational Interviewing tailored for OUD, and supporting wellness in people with OUD so they may thrive in their lives and communities of choice.

More than two million people in the U.S. currently meet criteria for opioid use disorder (OUD), a treatable, but potentially fatal disease. OUD puts people at risk for overdoses, infectious diseases, and a host of other medical problems associated with injection drug use.

Development of OUD is impacted by both genetic and environmental factors. Effectively treating OUD addresses both of these factors through medication, behavioral interventions, and recovery supports, which work together to elicit positive behavior change and support long term recovery.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the basic elements of an opioid use disorder including risk factors, disease progression, and effective treatment interventions.
  • Identify the basic tenets of harm reduction and how they relate to readiness to change.
  • Explain the impact of trauma on the development of an opioid use disorder and how trauma informed care works to mitigate it.
  • Identify the key ingredients of motivational conversations, including the four elements of the “Spirit of M.I.”
  • Describe how wellness interventions support recovery, including easy, accessible ways to improve nutrition, physical activity, and stress management.
