Peer Support in Crisis Services Learning Community
Peer support services are an essential part of comprehensive crisis systems. SAMHSA’s 2020 National Guidelines for Behavioral Health Crisis Care describes the value of peer supports in each of the core elements of crisis systems: crisis call centers, mobile crisis response, and crisis receiving and stabilization services. Peer support is also critically important following overdose and other substance use-related crises.
This learning community will bring together people and organizations seeking to integrate peer support into crisis services. National experts will share best practices and strategies for addressing challenges related to service delivery, organizational readiness, and recruiting and supervising peer support workers.

- Practice level: Beginner to expert. Small groups will be sorted based on work experiences.
- Course type: Live online sessions for 90 minutes per week with a 40-minute plenary addressed followed by 45 minutes in small discussion groups. Community members will have 1-2 hours per week of independent work including action planning, self-assessment, assigned readings, and individual meetings with faculty.
- Covered topics: Competencies and job descriptions of peer support providers, recovery-oriented crisis services, strategies for improving communication and cohesiveness of teams, policies and procedures to operationalize peer support, safety protocols, developing networks of services and supports, supervision of peer workers in crisis services and program/system-level problem solving.
By taking part in this learning community, participants will achieve the following learning objectives:
- Describe the competencies needed by peer support staff working in crisis services
- Cultivate a strong team with a shared commitment to program mission
- Establish safety protocols
- Understand the value of peer support in crisis settings and be able to communicate this value effectively to others
- Develop networks of post-crisis support for people in need
- Improve supervision strategies for crisis services
- Explore strategies for solving system-level problems
Participants will also forge supportive connections with other Learning Community members.
Meet the Instructors
Cheryl Gagne, Sc.D., Senior Associate, C4 Innovations, has spent her career assisting people in recovery achieve their goals and full participation in communities of their choice. She provides training and consultation to help programs improve the recovery outcomes of people served. Since 1990, Cheryl has worked on projects designed to maximize the involvement of people living with mental illness and/or substance use disorders. Cheryl led the development of SAMHSA’s Core Competencies for Peer Workers in Behavioral Health Services and Supervision of Peer Workers training resources.
Cheryl will be joined by leaders in the field of peer support and crisis services.
Certificates of Completion and Continuing Education Credits will be awarded to participants who attend all 6 plenary sessions, complete all required learning activities, score 80% or higher on each weekly quiz, and complete the course evaluation form and certificate request form. 4 hours of continuing education credit will be awarded upon completion of this course through ASWB and NBCC.8 hours of continuing education credit will be awarded upon completion of this course through NAADAC. Certificates will be emailed directly to participants roughly two weeks after the completion of the final webcast.
